Summit Symphony Orchestra will open its 2026-27 season with a free family concert designed to introduce young listeners to the sound, history and changing shape of the orchestra. The Orchestra Grows Up! is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. at Summit High School on Kent Place Boulevard.

The Summit Chorale brought singers, instrumentalists and community members together in New Providence on Sept. 13 for a free 9/11 Memorial Concert and Sing-In featuring Mozart's *Requiem*.

Summit High School graduate Matt Felix represented the United States at the 2026 Transplant Football World Cup in Frankfurt, Germany, bringing a story of friendship, recovery and community support to the international tournament. The competition, held Sept. 13-18, brought together soccer players who have received organ transplants from countries around the world.

The Christ Child Society of Summit joined members of the Summit Elks Club to assemble and distribute 600 backpacks for children in the community through its annual School Supplies Drive.

The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey will open three new exhibitions on Friday, Oct. 2, examining how artists use photographs, film, inherited objects and family archives to preserve and reconsider memory. The exhibitions will remain on view through Jan. 10, 2027, with an opening reception from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 2.

Madison Rotary, Grace Church and Repair Cafe Garden State will host a free Repair Cafe on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Grace Church, 4 Madison Ave. The event invites residents to bring small household items for repair on a first-come, first-served basis.

October is Rett Syndrome awareness month. Rett syndrome is a very rare disorder that some babies are born with. Girls are affected more but there is a very small percentage of boys that have it also. It affects your brain, muscles, and development because your cells are not able to make the MECP2 gene it needs.

The Summit Free Public Library has been selected as one of 40 public libraries nationwide for the Yiddish Book Center’s 2026-27 Public Libraries Program, a project that will bring books, discussion resources and future cultural programming to the community.

National Merit Scholarship Corporation has announced the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists. Tessa Chow of Kent Place School and Brianna Cui, Yimeng Guo and Hunter Patel of Summit High School were named Semifinalists.

The Summit Free Public Library has announced a varied October schedule of author conversations, educational programs, music, crafts and family activities. To register or see the full calendar, visit summitlibrary.org. Unless otherwise noted, programs are held at the library, 75 Maple St., Summit.

As it begins its 20th season, the Continuo Arts Foundation has launched the Institute for Lifelong Learning, an educational initiative intended to expand the Foundation’s work in music, performance and the arts. The Institute is based at the Conservatory of Music, 36 Chatham Road in Summit, where its programs are designed to bring artists, educators and other professionals together with community members of all ages.
