Rather than cancel their summer adventure, the Scouts quickly shifted plans and set out on a wilderness canoe route from Long Lake to Tupper Lake in upstate New York. Carrying their food, camping gear and personal equipment, they paddled through remote stretches of the Adirondacks and camped along the route.
The trip also included an approximately 10-mile hike through the Cold River Valley and numerous wildlife sightings, including a nesting pair of bald eagles.
Throughout the expedition, the Scouts put their training into practice by navigating, setting up camp, preparing meals, managing equipment and working together to complete each day’s route. These shared responsibilities made the journey an opportunity to apply the skills they had developed while preparing for their original trek.
The new destination gave the crew a chance to carry those preparations into a different wilderness setting. Days of paddling, hiking and camping brought together the outdoor skills and cooperation needed for a multiday expedition.
What began as a last-minute change of plans became a memorable high-adventure experience and a fitting example of the Scout motto: Be Prepared.
